Pennsylvania Archery Season 2026: Opening Day, Dates & Last-Minute Checklist

The countdown is on.

Pennsylvania's statewide archery deer season opens Saturday, October 3, 2026, which means bowhunters across the state are making their final preparations for one of the most anticipated times of the hunting year.

Here in Western Pennsylvania, hunters around Brookville, Fairmount City, Jefferson County, Clarion County and the surrounding areas are checking stands, shooting bows, organizing packs and getting ready for those first cool mornings in the woods.

Whether you've been shooting all summer or you're just getting serious about preparing for opening day, now is the time to make sure you're ready.

When Does Pennsylvania Archery Season Start in 2026?

For most of Pennsylvania, the 2026-27 statewide archery deer season for antlered and antlerless deer runs:

October 3 – November 20, 2026

The late archery season returns:

December 26, 2026 – January 24, 2027

Hunters in WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D have different dates, with their early archery season beginning September 19.

Sunday Hunting Expands for 2026

There's another important change Pennsylvania hunters should know about this year.

For the 2026-27 season, Sundays that fall within the established archery deer season dates are included as hunting days.

That means more opportunities to get into the woods this fall, especially for hunters trying to fit their time in the stand around work, school and everything else that fills the week.

As always, hunters should review the current Pennsylvania Game Commission regulations for their specific Wildlife Management Unit and make sure they have the proper licenses and tags before heading out.

Your Last-Minute Archery Season Checklist

Opening day has a way of arriving faster than expected.

Before October 3 gets here, take a few minutes to go through your equipment. Finding a problem in the garage is a lot better than finding it in the woods.

1. Give Your Bow a Complete Once-Over

Start with the bow itself.

Check your string and cables for excessive wear or fraying. Inspect your D-loop, peep sight, rest, sight and other accessories. Look for loose hardware or anything that doesn't seem quite right.

And most importantly, shoot it.

Even if everything was dialed in last season, don't assume nothing has changed.

2. Shoot Your Hunting Setup

Don't stop at shooting field points.

Before the season begins, make sure you're confident with the arrows and broadheads you actually plan to hunt with.

You don't want the first real test of your hunting setup to happen with a deer standing in front of you.

3. Check the Rangefinder

It's a small thing that's very easy to overlook.

Make sure your rangefinder works and check the battery. Do the same for your headlamp, flashlight and any other battery-powered equipment you depend on.

A spare battery or two in your pack isn't a bad idea either.

4. Inspect Your Tree Stand and Safety Equipment

If you're hunting from an elevated stand, inspect your equipment before you climb into it this season.

Check your stand, straps, ropes, lifelines and safety harness for wear or damage, especially equipment that has spent extended time outdoors.

Never assume last year's setup is automatically ready for another season.

5. Get Your Hunting Pack Ready

Don't wait until the night before opening day to start looking for everything.

Depending on how you hunt, your pack might include:

• Rangefinder

• Release

• Backup release

• Binoculars

• Headlamp or flashlight

• Knife

• Gloves

• Calls

• Wind checker

• Drag rope

• Extra batteries

• Hunting license and required tags

Get everything together ahead of time so opening morning can be about hunting instead of wondering what you left sitting at home.

Get Some Realistic Practice In Before Opening Day

At this point, confidence in your equipment is more important than simply putting a lot of arrows into a target.

Use the remaining time before the season to practice the types of shots you could actually encounter while hunting.

If you hunt from a tree stand, don't take every practice shot standing perfectly upright on level ground. Practice sitting down. Shoot from different angles and distances. Wear some of the clothing you'll actually hunt in.

Most importantly, know the distances at which you can consistently make an accurate shot.

Opening day isn't the time to find out where that limit is.

Archery Season in Western Pennsylvania

There's a reason archery season is such a big deal around this part of Pennsylvania.

By early October, mornings are getting cooler, leaves are beginning to change and hunters are finally getting the opportunity they've been preparing for all year.
